Inside Firefly Online ÔÇô Pt. 6: Ships

Post by shadowfyre2 » Mon Jul 27, 2015 8:26 pm

In the Verse, your ship is many things: itÔÇÖs your means of transportation, a way to make ends meet, but most importantly, itÔÇÖs home. In Firefly Online, youÔÇÖll get to form that bond for yourself by choosing from vessels both familiar and new to claim as your very own.

At the start of the game, youÔÇÖll be given the opportunity to choose your first ship among a handful of small starter vessels. Avid FFO players will likely have a few extra choices at their disposal, thanks to digital purchases and rewards from the Cortex and other sources. To be clear: these ships will give you just enough to get your life in the Verse up and running. YouÔÇÖll likely outgrow your starter ship quickly, but treat her well and sheÔÇÖll serve you adequately for some time.

As you continue to bank more coin, youÔÇÖll be able to upgrade to something a bit more luxurious. This is where your options really open up, with the right ship for you varying greatly based on the way you play. Ship prices are determined by its size, how much it can be expanded, and by the quality of its reactor. If you pay a bit more for a better ship, youÔÇÖll notice improved wear and tear performance, which can further enhanced by investing in good thrusters. Purchase larger ships in order to add more crew to your roster, reach greater distances with less wear and tear, and expand cargo capacity.

To increase your shipÔÇÖs capabilities even more, you can perform several other upgrades to make the most of your boat. Most ships you buy off the lot can be upgraded with expanded cargo capacity ÔÇô an essential upgrade for cargo hauling jobs. However, if youÔÇÖll be looking to move the kind of cargo the Alliance frowns upon, youÔÇÖll want to add on a smugglerÔÇÖs hold to aid you in your unsavory transport activities. Other possible upgrades include room to add additional passenger berths or crew bunks, lounges for your crew to spend their down time, or infirmary upgrades to increase the number of patients you can heal at once.

Upgrade your ships by visiting ÔÇ£docksÔÇØ, which are located in larger towns that have the proper ship facilities. Once docked, you can fully repair ship engines, purchase upgrade thrusters, or add/adjust d├®cor for crew bunks and other interior spaces. Players can also customize exterior paint jobs here. If youÔÇÖre the sort that likes variety, you can own multiple ships (up to a TBD limit) and store them at these docks.

While upgrading available space and amenities is certainly important, ship upkeep is even more critical. After all, you canÔÇÖt keep flying if your shipÔÇÖs about to fall out of the sky. Keep a watchful eye on your shipÔÇÖs wear and tear and be sure to visit the engine room to restore a portion of your engineÔÇÖs integrity. You wonÔÇÖt be able to bring the engine back to full operational capacity from here ÔÇô that can only be done at a dock. But you can keep the wolves at bay, conduct regular repairs and keep it from dipping into the red by interacting with the engine and investing a consumable called Scrap. If the engine falls into disrepair, thereÔÇÖs a constant chance that itÔÇÖll break down during your travels, resulting in you drifting about helplessly in space.

Should you find yourself in such a situation, youÔÇÖll either need to expend a substantial amount of Scrap to get it up and running again, or send out a distress call and hope that the person who shows up is friendly. Having friends increases the chance that an NPC version of their crew will arrive to save the day, free of charge. If not, you may find yourself being visited by opportunistic pirates, an Alliance cruiser, or even worse: Reavers. Be sure to keep your vessel in tip-top shape, unless you want to become Reaver food!
